A piano isn’t a couch. A grand piano can run 500 to 1,200 pounds, balanced on three thin legs, with an exposed lid, keys, and internal strings under real tension. An upright is lighter and boxier but still awkward — tall, heavy up top, and easy to tip if it isn’t strapped to a proper piano dolly. A digital piano or keyboard is a different animal: much lighter, no internal soundboard to protect, but still worth a padded ride instead of getting tossed in with the boxes. We size the crew and the gear to which of these three you actually own, not a one-size-fits-all furniture quote.
Grand pianos get the most careful treatment. In most cases the legs, lyre (pedal assembly), and sometimes the lid come off before the body goes onto a padded piano board and gets strapped down for the move — then the crew reassembles everything at the destination. Uprights usually travel intact, strapped upright onto a piano dolly, or laid onto a board if the doorway or stairs demand it. Digital pianos travel fastest: wrapped in a blanket, carried or dollied, no disassembly needed. None of this is a guessing game on move day — tell us which one you have when you book and we bring the right gear the first time.
The other thing that makes or breaks a piano move is math you can do before we ever show up: doorway width, hallway turns, stair count, and elevator interior dimensions. A grand piano that clears your living room doorway by two inches doesn’t clear it by two inches once it’s strapped to a board — the numbers matter before move day, not during it. We ask for these measurements up front specifically because a piano stuck halfway through a stairwell turn is a bad afternoon for everyone involved.
Where the piano is going matters too. Moving within the same building — say, from a third-floor unit down to a first-floor unit in the same condo — is usually the simpler version: shorter distance, no truck loading, sometimes just an elevator ride and a hallway. Moving to a new home across town means a full load, secure transport, and the same careful unload and placement on the other end. Both get the same piano board, straps, and blanket treatment; the building-to-building move just skips the truck.
Cost is straightforward. Pianos need a minimum 3-mover crew, so pricing starts at $149/hr (3-hour minimum), with $199/hr for a 4-mover crew on tougher jobs — multiple flights of stairs, tight turns, or a grand piano in the mix. Truck, fuel, the first 20 miles and all equipment — boards, straps, blankets, dollies — are included in that rate. A piano is a specialty item, so a handling charge starting at $75 applies depending on the instrument, the access and what the move requires; we quote that number and get your sign-off before we touch the piano, never after the job.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?
Almost always, yes — even a careful move changes humidity, temperature, and sometimes the angle a piano sits at, all of which affect tuning. We move the piano safely; plan to book a piano tuner two to three weeks after the move once it’s acclimated to the new space.
What if my piano has to go up or down stairs?
Tell us the stair count and width when you book. Stairs are the single biggest factor in crew size and time estimate for a piano move — we bring stair-climbing equipment and extra hands rather than improvising on move day.
Do you charge extra for moving a piano vs. regular furniture?
No separate piano fee — you pay the same hourly crew rate as any other move, just at the crew size the piano requires (3-4 movers instead of 2). Truck and equipment are included at every tier.
